There is a lack of infrastructure that has been constructed in response to the contaminants produced from the Port of Providence in Rhode Island. Air quality surrounding the Port is impacted by air pollution from legacy industrial sites –diesel trucks, marine vessels, oil and gas storage and distribution, asphalt and cement processing, metals recycling, natural gas and utility services, and large heating plants. The thesis sets out to investigate, question, and iterate upon the possibilities of collective environmental action and accessible information through an individual’s sensing practice. The work aims to redefine the sensing practice in daily routine and map the contamination zones of their community. Simultaneously, the thesis is testing how making these ecosystems legible to the observer may result in a shift in one’s perception about one’s environment, generate participatory infrastructures, and, ultimately, cultivate a deeper connection to one’s community. This is a loaded term that has an affiliation with place, governance, policy. A citizen science is traditionally defined as the collection and analysis of data relating to the natural world by members of the general public, typically as part of a collaborative project with professional scientists. In the vertical of decision making as it pertains to data collection and decision making, I am purposefully not involving influences of groups such as policymakers, local governments + municipalities, or current citizen scientists.&nbsp; I am focusing on the archetype defined as the dabbler, or one of their current environment; interested in&nbsp; contributing to a collective body of environmental information, but confused on how. Above, there are two archetype journeys. These have been developed through user interviews and experience testing to further the definition of someone who might be considered the dabbler, and someone who is a disinterested participant. Firstly, the inciting incident of air-pollution (identifying the source), the haptic feedback of the incident: notice and show (smells, visuals, feels), utilizing a tool to gather clarity about nebulous pollution: sense and gather, have the knowledge-base to understand that information to a larger knowledge base for people to use. The thesis seeks to bring the source of this information into further clarity, develop new models of communication, and resolve the ‘black box’ interpretation while interacting with information. comprised of evolving technologies,&nbsp;irregular sounds, demanding social situations, and products&nbsp;designed for fine-motor skill interaction, is a sensory&nbsp;overload to those living with hypersensitivity, a lack of&nbsp;gross motor function, including people on the Autism&nbsp;spectrum. Outdoor recreation can offer a respite from those&nbsp;things. Unfortunately, for reasons of safety and efficiency,&nbsp;design in the industry is inherently ableist. Throughout the design process, I collaborated with two non-profit groups that specialize in assistive technology. Adapt, a community network, based out of New York City, that helps pair people or families with special needs with assistive technologies, primarily educational tools, and the other - Wilderness on Wheels, a community-focused group that organizes recreational outings, and focuses on outdoor assistive technologies for people with disabilities. An insightful question I had developed during the collaboration process: How might we create equitable sensory experiences in recreational activities for those with limited motor function? ResearchAlong with Adapt and Wilderness on Wheels, I worked with the Boston Children’s Hospital to help develop experimental methods for people with hypersensitivity. I researched sensory-specific reactions to materials, color creation with natural dyes, wayfinding psychology to colors and forms of products to infer intended use, and creating user-empathy investigation explores the realities of land ownership, food resources, policy enactment, and how the natural ecosystems play into the energy harvesting systems of the industrialized world. Taking place in the Uinta River Basin of Utah and Colorado, the Price of Fulfillment is an interactive map examining the impacts of policy changes proposed by the Bureau of Land Management under the Trump Administration. The area is a point of interest because of its tar sand deposits that can be strip-mined for Bitumen. Given the highly lucrative nature of strip mining, there is a play by foreign governments to utilize this land for profit. This orients the user to the states that are being examined, as well as the largeness of energy consumption that is taking place within the US. The map itself has the functionality to zoom in and out of scales to allow the user to understand the data comparison in finer detail. There is an unintended line drawn between the object and methods of surveillance and the surveilled. The thesis of Futurescapes, scrutinized through design-research projects, is one of ambivalence, neither for nor against the practices of surveillance. The questions posed are around the transparency of data-mining and consumer surveillance. These questions take shape as experiments in saccadic masking during a memory recall exercise, to the diegetic prototyping of a CISKU wearable and developed narrative around Amazon, Inc. as a nation-state. One can wear a consumer identification stock keeping unit (CISKU) to subvert this system of Amazon totality and not participate in the traditional consumer contract. The CISKU wearable has one’s consumer profile, comprised of specifically pointed questions, pre-loaded to communicate to others within the network via the 5 senses. Everything is petro – chemically colored. Varying blues and greys.&nbsp;There is a human walking beneath the tree, to give scale, but also context.&nbsp;These things don’t exist without human interaction and abiotic factors aren’t producing abiotic experiences. They’re both lively.&nbsp;A point in an environment’s life – cycle is layered: distorted, wrong. It shows an alteration of reality.&nbsp;It also shows there are multiple perspective of the tree. There is a physical component to the bot being a carbon sequestering plant, the Geranium maculatum, that continuously scrubs the air. The bot has been made a dynamic sensor by being designed as a portable item that can be carried by the user in a recycled Dyneema carrying bag, where the plant and physical computing scheme are held.&nbsp;The goal is to have the user walk around, go about their day, while to Plantbot is streaming air quality data, looking for spikes, or irregularities from a given normal. When a spike is recognized, it sends a notification via Twitter, telling the user to stop and allow the plant to scrub the air in a given area. After those initial numbers go through the ‘filter’ of the GPS application, they are submitting to the Twitter account via a serial communication application, Node.js (06), on a Raspberry Pi computer. Again, from Node.js, applying a translation to those initial numbers to know create a message stating why those numbers matter, and subsequently tweeting them out from the Twitter Development platform These systems can be seen in christianity, eighteen-wheeler trucks, veganism, or plane travel. All distinctively different, yet similar in that each one defines the way you project yourself in the layered nature of infrastructure, there are two stages where this primarily plays out: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;1. Logistics &nbsp; - &nbsp;what it takes to get the latest, greatest iphone to the market/the money it will take, the labor, the energy.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;2. Culture &nbsp; - &nbsp; the reverberation of getting the latest, greatest iphone to market. How it affects social status, hot it connects us instantly to anyone, anything, anytime. The interesting thing about logistics and culture is the mutually beneficial relationship they have with one another - culture is affected by logistics and vice versa. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The thesis is organized around a few basic question about these two infrastructures and the preexisting relationships they may already have, such as: societal impact or privatized investing in the large-scale infrastructure is a relatively new concept how will this affect the norm and will the changing landscape of technology play into it? Can the two systems be combined as a whole to work in synchonicity? Primarily, design projects have used technology as a cure for economic, societal, and infrastructural problems. Why is technology the lynchpin in a multi-faceted system? This is specifically because Amazon, in 2017, has applied for over 1,000 patents to improve the ‘everything’ store. Amazon’s main goal is to reduce the friction you have with your wallet. As a corporation, Amazon is pushing the boundaries of logistics, business enterprise, and design in the form of architecture or infrastructure, to adapt to an ever-growing consumerist society. These prescribed four ecologies are Surfurbia, Autopia, the Plains, and the Foothills. Each one contributes to the meta architectural narrative of Los Angeles and the people that live in it. Taking the standpoint of defining places as ecologies, especially in a region such as LA, is an interesting one. Banham’s book was published in 1971, a ground breaking&nbsp; body of architectural research and theory. Since 1971, culture, politics, economics, and logistics has changed drastically. Infratecture is revisiting and appropriating the standpoint of Reyner Banham, along with adding to research by defining key regions that infratecture may operate in. Amazon currently has a patent-pending on a dirigible distribution center that occupies an airspace not currently used, supplying regions via drone delivery systems. Infratecture will use dormant brownfield/ rail yards throughout the greater Los Angeles area to provide geothermal power to each one of these systems, as well as excess storage and alternative drone landing area. There is no real social interaction or program involved with this particular ecology.
